Count Your Blessings

We've added a neat piece to our evening Bible time.  As we're gathered together practicing our hymn of the month, reading a short selection from the Bible (currently a Psalm) and praying, we take time to sing the chorus of Count Your Blessings.

It's a short chorus, but one of vital importance.  I want my children to count their blessings.  Hey--I want ME to count my blessings.  Negative thought patterns are so easy to fall into.  I want to purposefully spend time before bed thinking positively on the many blessings the Lord has given us.

After the chorus, we take turns sharing something (or sometimes two or three things) that we are thankful for.  Sydney is even joining in.

Here are some items mentioned in the last few days...

Fishing with Grandpa in Grouse Creek

A nice house to live in

Playing at the park

A God who loves us

Good food to eat

I love it! I love how our kids are learning to be thankful.  And how I'm being reminded how to be thankful. Even on hectic days, we can find things to be thankful for.

What are some blessings in your life?

Using Excel to Make a Shopping List

A few weeks ago I posted our updated menu.  With an updated menu, I needed an updated shopping list.  I wanted to share with you how I use Excel to make grocery list making easy. This isn't the only way to do it--just the way I did.  I'd love to hear other tips you have!

First, I used my recipes to figure out what I needed to keep stocked.  That was the most time consuming part.  Remember to list even the "staples" like salt and pepper.  You have to make sure you have everything you might need!

In a new workbook in Excel, I began typing each item in column A.

I didn't worry about which store I wanted to buy these items at, I just started typing my ingredients.

After I typed those all in, I moved to column B.

Here, I picked which store I would usually buy this item from.  Typically on a shopping day, I go to Costco, Cash & Carry, Winco, and Wal-Mart.  I also have some pantry items now that I order online (which I think will be increasing as I get a better hang on it!) I know which store I usually find the best price at, so that is the store I picked for each item.

Next came quantity in column C.  I looked over my menu plan, and decided how many of each item I wanted to keep on hand.  I won't need to buy each item every month, but this way I have a number in mind each time I prepare my list.

For instance, I want to have 8 cans of tomato sauce on hand.  That allows me enough to use 2 cans a week. If I'm getting ready to shop, and realize I still have 5 cans, I will only need to buy 3 to get me up to 8.

After I knew how many of each item I wanted, I started filling in prices in column D.  Most of the prices I knew (or know I'm at least close.)  I round up, trying to overestimate not underestimate.  Each time I go shopping, if the price is significantly different, I make a note on my shopping list and will update my list.

All of this has been work so far on my end.  Now it's time to let Excel work its magic and do some of my work for me. I used column E for a total column.  Then I needed to insert a formula.  It's really simple!

In column D, for the first item on my list, I enter this: =(

And then I click on the quantity box for that item (from column C).

Then I hit * for multiply

And click on the price box for that item (from column D).

Then close up your parenthesis.

So you have =(C2*D2)

And Excel will calculate this math for you.  To get this formula for every item, simply click on the cell you just used. A little box will show in the corner.

Click on that black box and drag down until you've drug it to all of your items.  The formula will automatically update for each row, leaving you with correct totals for everything on your list!

Only a few steps left to make this more user friendly!

I need to know exactly what I need to buy at each store.  So I need to sort my list.

To do this, click on the cell that is between column A and row 1.  It has sort of a triangle in it.  Doing this will highlight the whole book.

Then click on "Sort and Filter".  A custom sort is needed, so select that option.

This menu will open up...

We need our list sorted by Column B--the stores.  So use the drop down menu to select the correct column.  I left the other two options alone.

When you hit OK, you'll find your whole list sorted by store.  Yeah!

Then I copied and pasted each store section onto a new sheet.  That way I only have to look at one list at a time when I'm in the store.  To do that, highlight all the items for one store.  Then use the Edit menu to hit copy.  Then click on a tab at the bottom and a blank page will open.  Hit cell A1 and use the menu to paste your selection.

Then right click on that tab and rename the sheet so it is the name of the store.

Delete the now blank cells from your original list, so you don't lose track of the items further down the list.

Repeat for every store.

Remember to save!

But, I need a total for each store.  That way I can better keep my items within my grocery budget.  So I go down to the very last entry on Column E and skip another row.

Time for one last formula.

=SUM(

And then use your mouse to click on the bottom item.   Drag up to your top item.  Then close your parenthesis.

It'll end up looking like this:

=SUM(E2:E40).

And all of your math will be done for you.  Repeat for each store.  Then when you change the quantity on something, it'll automatically update the total.  Pretty neat!

Now each month, I can simply update my quantities, and the math will be done for me.  I love Excel shopping lists! A lot of work at first, but now it'll be easy for the upcoming school year!

And if I need something else that I don't normally buy, I can simply write it in.

My next project is to put this on Evernote so I can get it onto my smartphone and not have to carry a bunch of sheets of paper with me to Spokane.

Oh--speaking of printing.  Be sure to select "Entire Workbook" when you print your list, or you'll only end up with the first store.

How do you prepare your shopping list?

Weekly Round Up

We're back from a whirlwind day trip to the Tri-Cities (about 3.5 hours away).  We were picking up a lovely china cupboard/hutch unit from a Great Aunt, and visiting with Grandma and Grandpa.  They'll be coming up with the motor home at the end of August, and we have some kitchen renovations to complete.  I'm looking forward to it!

Since it's so late, I almost didn't post, but then I remembered that because of Jeffrey's stitches, I hadn't posted last week, so I really wanted to share pictures this time around.

We'll keep it short and sweet!

Sunday, July 27

I went upstairs during quiet time, and Jeffrey comes to me and tells me that a red car just took our our mailboxes (ours and my parents).  The teen driver (who speeds by here a couple times a day) also took out a phone box as he learned what can happen on a loose gravel road when you go too fast.  That lead to an interesting afternoon...

And we asked Jeffrey to let us know immediately if that ever happens again (or something similar.)  After all, quiet time can be broken for important reasons!

Monday, July 28

Thanks to Jayme for snapping this picture for me.  I had carried Owen from the back yard (where Jeffrey and Ellie had made a mud hole to play in) to the front, and didn't want to get my new iPhone (thanks Bryan!) all muddy.  Isn't he a cute dirty boy?
 Tuesday, July 29

My parents got another batch of 100 chicks.  Here is Ellie showing one off.
 Wednesday, July 30

Grandpa helped us blow Owen's pool back up and we enjoyed playing in it to cool off from the heat.
 Thursday, July 31

Our chicks!  Ellie with one again.  She really likes the babies! No...the adoption process didn't work.  The mama hen kept pecking the babies.  I had read that it's a possibility that she could kill all of them that we tried, and the frugal side of me decided not to take chances with $50 worth of chicken.  So they are in a crate in the chicken coop getting used to the flock from a distance.  We'll begin free ranging them together at 8 weeks or so.
 Friday, August 1

My cousin's baby (not quite sure the relationship on that one..second cousin?  Or once removed???) Either way...he turned 1!!!  We went to a fabulous birthday party with a ball pit and a trampoline.  Simon LOVED the balls!

Saturday, August 2

One of my favorite parts of a road trip.  Finding a random park and letting the kids run like mad to burn off their energy.  Jeffrey mastered the bars!  He went back and forth all the way several times.  He sticks out his tongue when concentrating!

It kind of looks like he's walking on the ground, but I promise he's really too short for that.  He actually did the bars!

And everyone had a blast.  I highly recommend the Ritzville Park if you are in the area.
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!  See you next week!

Chicks!

While finishing cleaning the barn from this morning's milking, my phone started ringing.  I answered, and was surprised to hear from the local post office.  My chicks were in!  I could go get them before they opened for business by ringing the service bell in the back.

How exciting!  I ordered from Ideal Poultry this time around (they could get me chicks the fastest and had the lowest shipping cost).  I was expecting them tomorrow--they were shipping from Texas after all.  But they made it overnight.  Yeah!

Jayme was awake, so I left her with the sleeping littles, and headed for our small town.  I rang the bell, and could hear the chicks peeping through the door.  A couple of minutes later, and I was on my way out of town with a box of a dozen little chicks.

When I got home, Jayme helped me get a temporary brooder set up.  If you remember, we are hoping that our broody hen (who lost all of her chicks before they hatched) will adopt them.  But, from all of my research, it appeared that they needed to be introduced at night for the best chances of being accepted.

Jayme helping to unpack the chicks and dip their beaks in water.
It was 6:50 in the morning.  A long ways until night.  So we set up a little brooder area in the utility room.  Since it was supposed to be over 100 today, I decided we didn't need a heat lamp.  The utility room stays really warm--no opening windows or fans in there.  The chicks have done well all day, so I think that decision worked.  They haven't been huddling too much, and are peeping like crazy!

We have 4 Golden Sex-Linked (our first time going with this type), 4 Ameraucanas (the blue and green egg layers) and 4 more Black Australorps (my dependable layers). They are supposed to all be pullets.  Only time will tell.  Well, I know the sex-linked ones are, but there are 8 others that will have to grow a while before we know for sure.

As Owen, Jeffrey, Ellie and Sydney woke up, they were sure surprised! Simon really wanted to dive in, so we've kept him out of that area today.

Some of the chicks have been named already.  We have a Chipmunk, a Beakie, a Sand and a Louis.  Other names have been thrown around randomly throughout the day, but I'm not sure which chicks they belong to yet.

Tonight we'll see if our adoption effort works.  Otherwise, we'll be brooding these babies in a trailer turned chicken coop that's on the farm.  I'm voting for adoption to work though, it'd be a lot easier!

I'll keep you posted.

Baldy's Backup Plan

Well, 21 days have come and gone.  Several days ago.  And we don't have little chicks.  When we candled the eggs, it looked like there were no longer any viable chicks.  How sad.  But our hen is still sitting patiently.

The backup plan?  After reading a great post on getting a hen to adopt babies, we got her moved to an old squirrel cage that was in the basement from when my dad was a kid.  And we moved her eggs.  And we ordered 12 baby chicks.  They should be here on Friday.

We were a little worried that she'd try and go back up to the nest box.  But thankfully, she's very content here.
Baldy has a small feeder and waterer in her new digs.

I'll  let you know how our chick adoption process goes.  The good news?  We have a plan C if needed--just brood the babies ourselves.  Hopefully we won't need to go that route.

Any tips on getting a broody to adopt babies successfully?

Sweet Cherries!

We have a single pie cherry tree in our backyard.  Every few years we get a decent crop.  But pie cherries aren't very tasty to sit and devour.  They kind of need some sugar.  And a pie crust.  Yum!

So when a neighbor called my parents and asked if we all wanted to come up and pick some of their abundant sweet cherries, we were excited!  We planned on doing it Friday, but with Jeffrey ending up needing stitches, we didn't make it up until Saturday.

It was worth the wait!

Sydney approved cherries!
Bryan was able to come picking too.  He picked a bunch! And he doesn't even like cherries.  Thanks honey!

It was such an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.  And now we have some sweet cherries in the freezer.

And my kids--who normally just get one colon cleansing a year when the plums get ripe...well, they got that process started early this year! :)

Do you enjoy cherries?

Jeffrey's Stitches

Friday was one of THOSE days.  You know the kind.  Where everything absolutely goes wrong.  The kind of day when you wake up in the morning and have no idea what is in store.

It started off fine.  We even got out of the house on time for the final day of VBS.  Pretty impressive!  When we came home, we went straight to my mom's to eat lunch.

Then we got invited to pick sweet cherries.  Jeffrey went home to change out of his spy clothes (they've been dressing up all week like spies) and came back to Grandma's covered from head to toe in blood.  Cinders bit him when he was trying to leave.

We got him cleaned up, and called the doctor.  They were booked, and recommened we go to the minor emergency clinic.  After an evaluation there, the doctor referred us to the local Children's Hospital for getting it stitched.  Because of how close it was to the eye, and how fearful Jeffrey is of needles, she wanted the option of sedation, which only the hospital had.

So we left again.  And in the meantime, I made one of the hardest decisions I'd ever made.  We had Cinders put down.  This was the second time he bit one of the kids hard enough to draw blood.  The first time was only a 2 on the bite scale, and it didn't require any special attention.  This time around, it had moved to a 3.  And was really, really close to both eyes.

I didn't want to wait for a chunk of skin to disappear or anything.  Or have the baby bitten.  Or have a kid lose an eye.  Or a visitor attacked. Cinders was becoming more aggressive, and it wasn't worth it.  I loved Cinders--he was always my dog.  But...I love my kids more.

Back to Jeffrey.  He was a trooper in the hospital.  Child Life came around with an iPad, and he enjoyed playing a game called Balloonimals.  That's an app I'll definitely be purchasing in the next few weeks!
Jeffrey with medicine on the wounds to stop the pain and help clean them out.

He did better than I thought he would until it came time to give him the medicine to make him "loopy."  It was in a syringe with a sponge on the end, and looked like a huge needle for a shot.  He finally calmed down and allowed it to go in his nose.

Once that kicked in, he was a champ.  The doctor stitched him up.  Three on one side, and five on the other.   When we were discharged, he couldn't walk straight.  And he was hilariously loud and just not like himself.  He liked his band-aids a lot.

And he's been healing for the past couple of days.  He goes to our pediatrician tomorrow for a follow-up and to check for infection.  I don't think he'll have further problems, thankfully!

I have also learned that our family is not at a stage now where having a dog is a good match.  We will not be getting another puppy--at least not while we have little ones in the house.  You just never know.  Dogs are dogs.  And they act like dogs.  Regardless of training and love and everything else you give them.  Sometimes they just snap for some reason.  We'll never know why.  But I learned my lesson a very hard way.

It could have been worse.  The Lord really provided for our family during this time.  Jeffrey's eye wasn't affected.  The inside of his nose wasn't punctured.  Grandpa was able to watch the kids while Grandma drove Jeffrey and I to the doctors.  And Bryan was able to leave work and meet us at the hospital. And I'm thankful for those things.
